February 2020: An Exploded Family Trip to FL: Day 8, The End

Day 8: Saturday February 29, 2020

I was awake pretty early today to finish packing. It wasn’t really easy to figure out what to wear today, since it was supposed to be slightly warmer, but still windy, and I kept finding stuff I had forgotten to pack. But the packing got done eventually. And while she had to use the expansion zipper on her suitcase, even Laura managed to finish her packing early.

Checking out of a condo is always kind of a pain, because it requires more, and often you have to check out earlier. This was the case here. We had to be out by 10, and we had to take the trash out, get dirty dishes in the dishwasher, etc. But, it all got done in time, although, judging from the mountains of towels in the hall outside our unit, I think housekeeping would have preferred if we were out earlier than 9:40!

We got the car packed up and drove the very short distance to the lobby where check out took just seconds. We then checked out the main pool area, which, much to Laura’s disappointment, the weather never allowed us to use.

Once we’d checked out the pool area, we hopped back in the car and drove to Disney Springs. This took a little longer than anticipated, because where Osceola Parkway exits onto Animation way (I think), there are two left lanes, without a sign that one of them forces you to bang a u-ey, and end up back on Osceola. But we were in no rush this morning. We had the whole day to kill!

We parked in the Orange garage, and headed into Disney Springs. First thing I noticed? The Onward movie photo op. And while checking it out, they handed me a free hat and mini poster. That’s right...Disney gave me something free. WOAH.

We poked around in a LOT of stores. As we were approaching Ron Jon, Laura mentioned something about flip flops. I told her there was just the store for that, and we hung a right into the store. Laura had no problem finding some flip flops. And I found some grocery list paper with flip flops on it! Score!

We continued wandering through stores in Disney Springs for awhile. This resulted in us being in the Aribas Brothers and Swarovski store. Here we were simultaneously horrified and amazed to find characters created out of Swarovski crystals, for asking prices in the 5 figures. That’s a $29,500 Darth Vader and a $33,000 iguana. Yup. NUTS!

Eventually it was late enough that we wandered over to Raglan Road for our brunch reservation. I had eaten there in August, but was too early for the live entertainment. This time I booked a reservation for the right time!

We were seated pretty quickly, off to the side, so we couldn’t see much of the dancing, but we did see some of it, and we could hear the music. Laura had a screwdriver to drink (“because it’s brunch!”) and got the club sandwich. I went for an AFD, so just had water with my OMG Burger. This involves brisket and pork in the burger, I believe, and is topped with bbq sauce, potato crisps, very thick cut Irish bacon, and Irish cheese. It was amazing. Laura enjoyed her sandwich too. Overall we both really enjoyed this brunch.

After brunch, we walked over to the marketplace boat dock and took a kind of chilly boat ride over to Riverside. We still had time to kill and we were over shopping. Also, I seem to have talked Laura into joining me in Disney in 2021, and we’re leaning towards a moderate resort. So, why not have her check out another moderate to see if she has any preferences?

We walked around the resort a bit, Laura got a (very bitter) margarita at the pool bar, and eventually we got back on the boat to Disney Springs. Once we were back at Disney Springs, it was perfect timing to (sob!) head for the car. We had some luggage rearranging to do, and it was better to do that here than at the airport.

Once the luggage was rearranged and Laura had accomplished what she thinks was a stealthy switch from jeans to leggings, we set off for the airport. It was an uneventful trip, and once we got past the Central FL Parkway area of I-4, the traffic was reasonable. We made a quick detour to my usual pre rental car return gas station stop (exit 9 off 528, hang a left), and then took the back route into the airport, past that hotel with the super noisy air conditioner where we stayed for a few hours before our cruise on the Fantasy.

And then we found traffic again. I’ve seen some crazy lines at rental car return, but this was just nuts. It wrapped partway around the airport basically. I was glad we were early, because by the time we returned the car, it was exactly the time I had said I’d return the car. There were so many cars being actively returned that they were actually using 2 sections of the garage just for the Alamo/National returns. It was NUTS! They had a good amount of staff on processing returns though. So we were on our way pretty quickly.

With a return line like that, it should come as no surprise that the rest of the airport experience was not as quick. I made it through bag check pretty quickly, but Laura picked the slow lane, so that was awhile. We said our goodbyes at security, where I joined the snail-like TSA pre-check line, and she headed for the regular line. She actually made it through the ID check faster than I did, but then I made it through the actual security part faster.

Eventually I was gateside, where I picked up a sub at Jersey Mike’s and then headed to my gate. When I check in, I was told gate 123. When I got to the gates, I found my flight to be going out of 122, so that’s where I parked myself. But they were dealing with a delayed flight, so my flight moved back to 123.

Meanwhile, Laura was texting me. When she checked in her gate was 125. By the time she got through security, it had changed to 108 on the departure board. But evidence at the gate was pointing to 108 not being hers. So I took a walk over to 125 to investigate, and before I could text her that there wasn’t much evidence there of that being her gate either, she appeared beside me.

This turned out to be really convenient, because my flight was boarding shortly, so Laura watched my stuff while I hit the restroom. Then we said goodbye for real, and she headed off to figure out her gate (125 did end up being her gate), and I waited around to board my flight. I think I was B14 for this flight, and the gate crew did a pretty good job of enforcing family boarding.

It seemed like every window seat forward of the wings was taken, so I snagged an aisle seat in row 3. The flight was fully boarded and actually pushed back a couple minutes early, despite being a completely full flight. It was a fairly quick flight; we got in about 20 minutes early. It was not entirely uneventful though. The events did restore my faith in humanity a bit though.

In row 2, there was a mom traveling alone with her 2 kids, a toddler and a 5ish year old. The toddler chugged a bottle right before take off. As the plane gained altitude said toddler screamed her head off, and everyone suspects that’s why she then, about the time we reached 10,000 feet, projectile vomited all over her mom. The flight attendants responded quickly with trash bags, and gloved up and grabbed the baby so that mom could figure out what to do. They continued holding the baby for the mom for quite some time, while mom stripped the baby, cleaned up the mess, and threw away her own sweatshirt. As the mom settled back down in just a tank top and leggings, a guy across the aisle found a spare shirt in his carry on and passed it off tom the mom to keep.

The rest of the flight was pretty uneventful. A bit turbulent, but, I’ve experienced worse.

Upon arrival in Manchester, mom was waiting for me. She said T was in the cell phone lot waiting for us; she’d been too tired to drive. The luggage appeared pretty quickly, and we headed outside.

MHT isn’t a large airport, so it doesn’t have a ton of curb. I usually try to find an end away from the main doors. Mom and T aren’t as good about that. This resulted in T getting yelled at by the airport police, because he tried to park in the crosswalk at the main entrance (insert face palm here). Eventually he found a spot that wasn’t against the law or in the way, we threw my suitcase in the truck, and drove back to mom’s, where I loaded my luggage in my car, let the car thaw out a bit, and hit the road home. I was back at my house by 10:30 that night, where I was greeted by both dogs and Nick.

Final thoughts:

I kind of dreaded this trip. I can’t say I loved all the driving, but it ended up being a really fun trip. It was nice to have sister time, since Laura and I usually only see each other surrounded by family, since she lives so far away. And T managed to be pleasant in FL, even after he figured out that a second house in the areas of FL he wants to be is not realistic.

Drinks in Disney World are about twice as much as they are on Disney cruises. It’s kind of horrifying.

I still hate driving around Disney. But Silver Lake Resort is a very convenient offsite option. Great location. The resort felt safe, it was clean, and well kept. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again.

It was really hard to leave this trip. I have a Disney Cruise planned in April with Nick and his parents, but coronavirus certainly is making the viability of that trip uncertain right now. Beyond that I don’t currently have any vacations scheduled for this year. I’m a firm believer in always having something scheduled. So, it was a tough trip to see end.

Much like in August, I really liked having the opportunity to check out some new to me non-park Disney stuff.

The Festival of the Arts is pretty awesome! It may have become my new favorite Epcot festival.

I’m really looking forward to seeing all of the new stuff coming in the next yearish to Disney!

The title of this trip report is my stepdad’s fault. He nicknamed our blended family and all of it’s extraneous members our “exploded family”.

February 2020: An Exploded Family Trip to FL: Day 7

Day 7: Friday February 28, 2020

I think Laura and I were both awake fairly early this morning. We made breakfast and got ready for the day, which included packing up the unused groceries to take to Grammy and Grampa’s. This last full day of vacation sure arrived fast! And unfortunately, it was evident that Laura’s traditional end of vacation snark and attitude had already arrived. UGH.

I think we were in the car around 9:30. I’d love to say that the drive was uneventful. It wasn’t. Google maps tried to save me time by having me exit the turnpike in Leesburg. Its goal was to have me return to the turnpike just north of the emergency road construction traffic backup, but, it apparently didn’t know that the on ramp was closed. So I ended up having to take route 27, which has a fair amount of traffic lights, and even more road construction. To make a long story slightly shorter, it took 2 hours to get to my grandparents’. You may remember that prior to this “emergency road construction” earlier in the week, it took me about an hour and 15 minutes to get there.

Needless to say we both were in great moods when we arrived at Grammy and Grampa’s (NOT). And then I remembered (and Laura found out for the first time) that relatives (cousins of Grammy’s somehow) were coming up from the Tampa area for lunch. That went over well…

Linda, Judy, and Bill (all siblings) arrived within half an hour of our arrival, bringing with them a big lasagna for lunch. There were too many of us for the dining table, so Laura and I opted to create a “kids table” out on the back screened in porch. Of course T was the person that decided to join us.

Lunch was delicious, despite the lasagna being gluten free. And dessert was strawberries and ice cream, since it was peak strawberry season in FL. We visited through dessert, and then when a natural opportunity presented itself, Laura and I headed for Sumter Landing, to allow the “grown ups” to visit.

The REAL reason Laura and I went to Sumter Landing is a store called Peterbrooke Chocolate. We go there every year. It’s a little chocolate shop with some really awesome treats. However, it was a BEAUTIFUL day, so we wandered a bit first, enjoying the sunshine.

Eventually we made it to Peterbrooke. I picked up a small package of white chocolate covered oreos. Then at the register I added the impulse buy of a dark chocolate filled with coconut cream for Nick, and also a milk chocolate covered pineapple ring. Yeah, this shop is amazing.

Eventually we couldn’t really justify hanging out any longer, so we drove back to Grammy and Grampa’s. Linda, Bill, and Judy were still there so we visited a bit more. They got on the road pretty soon after we got back. Then we visited a bit longer with Grammy and Grampa and Mom and T.

Laura and I got the road back to Orlando around 5:30. The ride back was reasonably uneventful, although we did find a LOT of traffic on 429, because the Turnpike was closed just south of there. But, we still made much better time than we had that morning.

We didn’t go right back to our condo. Instead, we headed for Coronado Springs. If it had been warmer, we would have eaten at Three Bridges, but it wasn’t, so we ate at the food court here instead. Laura and I both really liked both the feel of the resort, and the food court. Lots of great options in the food court. Laura had a bacon cheeseburger that actually looked like a real burger, and I had the beef barbacoa rice bowl. We both were very happy with our meals.

After dinner, we used the indoor walkway to go over to Grand Destino Tower. We briefly checked out the Barcelona lounge, which was stunning, but then took the elevator up to something like the 16th floor, because why go to the lounge on ground level when you can have a view of the parks from a lounge at a higher level?

It took a bit of looking, but Laura and I were able to find seats in the Dahlia Lounge. This is a really cool space, with a pretty spectacular view. There’s an outdoor patio too, where you can see Hollywood Studios (especially the blue lit Star Wars land), and the Epcot resort area. Laura got a glass of wine and I got a strawberry hard cider from Spain. We were able to see some of the fireworks from Hollywood Studios from where we were sitting (inside). Our server wasn’t the greatest, but we enjoyed our overall experience and would come here again. Because this is next to Toledo, it was significantly busier than the downstairs Barcelona lounge.

Once we’d finished our drinks and FINALLY had the opportunity to pay our check, we headed back to Silver Lake to pack. We both crashed pretty late that night, between packing, and Laura did some scheduling for work.

February 2020: An Exploded Family Trip to FL: Day 6

Day 6: Thursday February 27, 2020

Laura and I both were awake fairly early. We took our time getting ready though. We had decided to have a sister day today, and stay in Orlando. I needed a break from the driving, and she needed a day of vacationing.

We got rolling sometime after 9. Our first stop? BJs warehouse. Laura had mentioned that her boyfriend had eaten ALL of the trail mix she had bought at BJs at home at Christmas time, and she couldn’t find anything comparable in Pennsylvania. There was a BJs about 20 minutes down Osceola Parkway, so it was time to look for trail mix.

In NH, we have state run liquor stores. Grocery stores can sell beer and wine, but liquor is sold only in the state run liquor stores. So imagine our surprise when we found a liquor store attached to and operated by BJs. We refrained from checking it out though.

Laura found her trail mix, bought 2 boxes of it, we took advantage of nice inexpensive gas to refuel the rental car for the 2nd time already this week, and we were on our way back to vacationing. It was cold out (50?), so we didn’t worry about leaving trail mix with chocolate in the trunk of the car.

Next stop? Winter Summerland mini golf! We were one of just 2 cars in the parking lot, roughly 15 minutes after they opened. The cast members were sporting parkas and I think they thought we were crazy for being out mini golfing in this cold without jackets, until they asked where we’re from. Then they told us to have fun.

We played the summer course. The theming was fun, the course was a little challenging, but not frustrating, and we laughed harder than I have in a very long time. Laura thinks we might have tied. I haven’t checked her math.

After mini golf, it was off to Disney Springs. It was an easy enough drive over there, and we easily found a parking space in the relatively empty Orange garage.

Our first stop at Disney Springs? Chicken Guy for lunch. We both had crispy chicken tenders. I had the garlic parmesan sauce and the sweet and sour sauce. The sweet and sour sauce had a LOT of pepper in it. I love the garlic parmesan sauce there. Laura liked it too.

After lunch, Laura and I explored World of Disney. Then we hopped on a bus to the Grand Floridian. We got one of the new buses. They have fancy floors and charging ports. Woah!

We had decided to check out the new Enchanted Rose Lounge. I’m not a fan of the red roof, but I (we) really enjoyed this lounge. The theming is really nice, the atmosphere is relaxed, the cocktails are good, and the view is great. I had the Kir. Laura had the Island something (Island Rose maybe?). We both were really happy that we came here.

Then it was time for a monorail trip and what is becoming our traditional sister selfie.

We got off the monorail at the Contemporary because we both like looking around the store there. It was a fairly quick stop overall.

As we got back on the monorail, I noticed we would be arriving at the Polynesian shortly before Trader Sam’s opened. We decided to check out the line as soon as we got to the Polynesian.

When we got to Trader Sam’s, we found a fairly short line, so we joined it. We were added to the list quickly, and told Trader Sam’s would be opening in about 15 minutes. We just waited in line. The wait passed quickly, and pretty soon Laura and I were snagging the last 2 barstools at the bar.

Trader Sam’s was some of the most fun I’ve ever had at Disney, which obviously is saying something. The bartenders were fantastic. The atmosphere is awesome. Laura got one of the barstools that sank (and so did a couple others, so she had “friends in low places”). The bartender saw us taking a selfie and insisted on taking a “better picture”, that resulted in a picture of us with props and a selfie the bartenders announced was the “best picture”. We had the pot stickers and 2 rounds of drinks. I had the Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Rhum, advertised by the bartender as being like a pina colada and a painkiller had a baby. It was a perfect description, and a perfect drink. Laura had the margarita. The drinks were great and the pot stickers were too. The whole experience was great!

We both walked out of there saying we understood why people wait hours to get in here. By the time we got to the bus stop to get on a bus to Disney Springs, Laura was already texting a coworker that’s going to Disney in a couple weeks telling him to go here, and what time to get in line. And I couldn't resist the tropical flowers.

When we got back to Disney Springs, we did some more shopping, mostly on the marketplace side. We also had dinner at Earl of Sandwich. We killed a fair amount of time and got in the car a little after 7 to drive over to the Beach Club, me kind of wishing I’d gone with the 7:50 ADR for Beaches and Cream when I booked it the previous day, instead of the 8:20.

As we walked into the Beach Club, Laura noticed that some guest was talking with security, but it didn’t seem THAT weird. Disney crawls with security and we both know it. Since we still had a good 40 minutes until we could check in for our ADR, we checked out the marketplace here at the Beach Club and also went over to the Yacht Club. Everything seemed like business as usual.

About 8, we walked back to Beaches and Cream and checked in. Then we sat outside to wait. We pretty quickly noticed a helicopter circling approximately every 90 seconds, complete with search life. WEIRD!

At just about exactly 8:20, I got the text to return to the podium. We were seated pretty quickly. After much debate over what to get (spoiler alert: I need to find another travel buddy...first time not solo in forever and STILL couldn’t get a true Beaches sundae…), we ordered our desserts.

Laura got the brownie sundae. I got the specialty strawberry milkshake. Yes, that’s a cupcake on top of the milkshake. And I got to take home the cup. I actually had the cupcake packed up too and left that with Grammy and Grampa and crew the next day. Laura brought half of her brownie back to the condo. A note about the refurb here: Beaches and Cream still has its charm. They did a nice job decorating it, and the artwork is adorable. But larger absolutely means louder here.

As we left the Beach Club, we began to wonder what was going on with that helicopter. There were 4 Disney security vehicles and about half a dozen sheriff's office vehicles by the car port/lobby entrance area. Then we got down to the parking lot where there was a similar collection. We left without incident, only to find police cars at the entrance to every Epcot resort we passed. UMMMM.

Laura went searching online while I drove. Turns out the guest she had seen talking with security had been reporting that they thought they saw another guest with a gun under their jacket. This launched the kind of response you’d only see at Disney or a school. Apparently, as we had been wandering, they’d actually (sort of) locked down the entrance to the Beach Club, and launched searches. They apparently concluded there was no actual threat shortly before we finished dessert.

Needless to say, Laura had a glass of wine when we got back to the condo and watched some TV. I watched the news on my TV and we agreed on a departure time for the next morning.
