The day started with a work day, which wasn’t quite as normal for me as it should have been at this point of the year. This work day was complete with the kind of IEP meeting that involves an advocate. But the meeting ended eventually, I attempted to provide speech services to kids that were mentally on vacation already (I get it!), and eventually I was racing home to get the trip started.
Once home, I filled food bags and kicked Nick and the dogs out the door. While Nick dropped the dogs off at our friendly local pet resort, I did up the last of the dishes and piled luggage and road snacks by the door. When he got home, we had grilled cheese sandwiches, then loaded the car. We were on the road a little before 5.
For a Friday night, it was a surprisingly uneventful drive to Danbury, CT. We made it to the Hampton Inn a little after 8. Check in was a breeze, and pretty soon we were on our way to our room, right behind the elevator, with our free Gold member snacks in hand. Nick wanted to know what kind of magic got him free Swedish Fish. It’s called a Hilton Amex honey.
Side note about our room. I had done online check in the day before. Usually with Hilton online check in, I’m able to select the room I want from available choices. I try to always do this, because despite having preferences of high floor and away from the elevator listed in my account profile, the computer often misses one or both of these requests. For some reason when I did check in, I was informed there were no rooms for me to choose from. Friday, during the school day, the front desk called me to make sure I was aware I had selected a room behind the elevator, and to offer to see if there was a different room available to switch me to. We had the “first off your computer picked that room” talk and ultimately, there was not another room in the same rate category to move me to, so nothing could be done, but we were only there for one night, and I appreciated him taking the time to call.
He wasn’t kidding. The room was literally behind the elevator. But it was a pretty standard Hampton Inn room and clean, we could hear surprisingly little from the hallway from the room, and we were only there for one night. Not a bad use of some Hilton points. So we settled in and crashed quickly, agreeing to be on the road the next morning by 8 am. Tomorrow would be our highest mile day.
