April 2024: A New Mexico Adventure: Day 4

Day 4: Tuesday April 23, 2024

When morning arrived, Nick headed for the shower, me aware that he’d slept restlessly but blissfully unaware of how miserable he was feeling. Eventually he filled me in that he was really nauseous. He sent me off to breakfast downstairs while he went back to bed to see if napping would help his cause.

I had the “classic” breakfast again at Del Charro again and then headed back upstairs to try to figure out how the day would be moving forward.

Nick was pretty sure that this issue was a side effect of a new med he’d started the week before, and since it was “just” nausea and our plans for the day involved visiting his parents up in Taos, who had a condo with a couch, and the visit involved a lot of driving to get there and he sleeps very well in cars, felt that we should still go. So we headed out, albeit a little later than planned.

Nick fell asleep shortly after leaving the hotel, and I drove the “High Road to Taos”. Although there’s not a ton of photographic evidence because there aren’t many good places to pull over, this was a beautiful drive and well worth the extra drive time.

We met up with Kim and John at their condo at the Wyndham/Worldmark Taos. Kim showed me around while Nick crashed on their couch. Then the four of us piled in their rental car. We found a parking spot near where John wanted us to have lunch and then walked towards the Plaza. We poked around some stores in the plaza and Nick rallied to some degree. The Plaza reminded me a LOT of the town square in the Spanish Springs section of The Villages.

Once we’d had our fill of shopping, we headed back towards the Bent Street Grille. John put his name in and then the debate about who would actually be eating there began. Eventually Nick and John headed back to the condo and Kim and I were seated for lunch shortly after on the patio, which was great. It was a BEAUTIFUL day.

We both had a turkey sandwich that involved turkey, cranberry and cream cheese. It was excellent, when it finally made it to us. Apparently the kitchen had gotten backed up, so it took a LONG time to get lunch. But our server was wonderful, attempted to keep us informed, brought us some fruit cups when the wait got REALLY long and she discovered that not only was it late for lunch there, but we were from the East Coast, and then they comped us one of the sandwiches because the wait had been SO long. The menu is pretty fru-fru, so maybe wouldn’t be my top choice restaurant if I found myself back in Taos, but, from service to food quality, I would recommend Bent Street Grille.

After lunch, Kim and I poked around a few more stores before heading back to the resort. We decided that since it had gotten fairly late and Nick was still in rough shape, that Nick and I would head back to Santa Fe, rather than go over to the gorge with his parents. So we all headed out, Kim promising to send pictures of the gorge.

It was an uneventful and beautiful drive back to Santa Fe. A lot of the drive along the “Low Road” is along side the Rio Grande, and some of it passes through a bit of a gorge. So while we didn’t see the massive part of the gorge up near Taos, we did get to see some degree of it.

Back in Santa Fe, we stopped at a grocery store to get some crackers, applesauce and Gatorade. Nick had refused to eat for the last 24 hours so we needed to get something in him. Nick ate some crackers on the way back to our hotel, and wouldn’t you know it, was feeling somewhat better before we even walked in the door.

Once back at Inn of the Governors, Nick feasted on crackers, applesauce and Gatorade in the room, while I headed down to Del Charro for dinner. I had blue corn chicken enchiladas and a prickly pear margarita. It was all delicious, and my margarita was free because of that $15 a night dining credit.

After dinner, I headed back to the room to crash, hoping for a better night’s sleep for both of us.
