By this point, John was getting antsy because we were a bit over the 2 hour limit painted on our free parking spot. But we had to pass the Downest Ice Cream Factory (again) on our walk back to the car, and 3 of the 4 of us in the group have a hard time passing an open ice cream spot with something like 50 homemade ice cream flavors.
So, we stopped for ice cream and ate on the pier, because duh. Kim had blueberry cheesecake ice cream (because Maine! And blueberries!), Nick had some chocolate cherry catastrophe, and I had caramel apple ice cream. It was all amazing, and I started plotting how many times we could visit this perfect spot. I mean really...homemade ice cream...on a pier!
We made our way back to the car, and then back to the resort. The fog had burned off here on the river, so I took some pictures of the fog-free view from the balcony.
Nick quickly decided to take a nap, and his mom and I went for a walk on the pier at the resort. Ok, we went for a photo crawl?
We had talked about going over to Fort Edgecomb which is basically next to the far end of the resort, so when Kim and I re-emerged from the pier, we found John waiting.
Nick decided to continue napping, so the 3 of us set off for the fort. This fort apparently was built after the revolution, when there were concerns about transit being interrupted, and never saw battle, but did host prisoners during one of the wars for a bit. It was pretty unique in appearance and provided some views that really screamed Maine.
Visit to the fort complete, we took a scenic tour and then returned to the resort to start figuring out dinner. This discussion eventually resulted in us piling in the car and driving back to Boothbay, to go to the Boothbay Craft Brewery for dinner.
Boothbay Brewery had set up a biergarten, so you actually order your pizza and/or beer outside, and then find a table in the yard. They’ve got some lawn games set up, appropriately distanced tables, and they bring your food and drink to you when it’s ready. They serve artisanal wood-fired pizza. Nick found the one table that was available that wasn’t a picnic table and it was actually under cover, in a 3-walled, open air structure. We were the only ones sitting in there for almost our entire meal. It really was a lovely atmosphere.
For dinner we split two pizzas: the Tuscan Herb Chicken pizza and a pizza with lobster on it. Nick and John enjoyed their beer. Kim and I went with Maine sodas. 3 of us enjoyed our pizzas very much. Nick was not as excited about the pizza.
After dinner, we headed back to the condo. The boys read, Nick took a very cold shower, because apparently the entire hot water heater for the unit fit under the counter of our mini-kitchen, and Kim and I played Quirkle and Monopoly Deal. It was an enjoyable evening.
