February 2024: A MAGICAL February Vacation: Day 1

Day 1: Friday February 23, 2024

The day started with a work day. Surprisingly, after how January went, I actually worked every school day in February. However, this wasn’t an entirely typical work day. Due to a plethora of staff absences, I was (voluntarily) on call for our intensive needs program, so I spent the day wired for sound. At one point, I realized I was walking down the hall carrying an iPad for the speech session I was going to, with my cell phone in my pocket, and a walkie talkie clipped to my other pocket. Yeah, I was glad when the buses started rolling in!

As soon as the buses rolled out, I left, knowing I had exactly 4 hours from that moment until when our car service would be picking us up at Nick’s parents’ house. I made quick stops at the post office and gas station, and then went home to get the dogs packed up. Nick got home as I was filling food bags, and he took over some of the dog gear packing. This left me free to make the trip to the ATM that I’d forgotten, and pick up takeout from the Everyday (2 Monkeys!) for dinner. When I got home, we ate, and then we loaded the car and headed for Nick’s parents’ house.

The trip to their house was uneventful. We visited with his mom for a bit and then when the text came in that our driver (Michael Richard, which immediately made me think of the Office, even though I don’t really watch the Office and that’s not the character’s name) had been dispatched by the car service, Axis Coach, and would be there in 15 minutes, we headed outside to haul the luggage out of the car, and move the car to a more convenient spot in the driveway for the week.

At exactly 6:45, Mike arrived. He loaded up our luggage, we piled in the car and we were off to Boston. The trip was uneventful and we arrived at our hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn Logan Airport before 8:00.

Check-in was uneventful and pretty soon we were in our room, wiping everything down because norovirus is EVERYWHERE, and appreciating the “holy crap we’re on vacation” view.

Then we attempted to crash for the night, because that 4 am wake up would come soon.
